Heat the oven to 180C, fan assisted and line 30cm cake tin
In a bowl, add the pitted dates and bicarbonate of soda. Then pour over the boiling water, give it a mix through and leave to sit.
Next add the butter, sugar, eggs, self raising flour, almonds, walnuts and then the dates with the boiling water into the food processor. The food processor will be very full, so blitz on the lowest setting, once it seems things are mixing well, increase the speed and allow it to blitz together for 2 minutes or so.
Then you will need to scrape the mixture into the cake tin spread the mixture evenly as possible.
Then spread the chocolate chips on top of the batter and bake for an hour.
After an hour check the cake to see if it's cooked through. I use a skewer to do this, if it comes out clean then the cake is ready. If not turn the heat down to 160C and cook for another 15 minutes. The cake should be fully cooked after this time.
