Mince Ingredients
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 600 grams lamb mince
- 1.5 tsp garlic, finely chopped
- 1.5 tsp ginger, finely chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped ( I used a red onion, but a white onion will also work)
- 1 tin of chopped tomatoes (400 grams)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1.5 tsp ground coriander
- 1.5 tsp ground cumin
- 1.5 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp onion granules
- 1 tsp chilli flakes (to taste)
- 100 grams frozen peas
- 1 large carrot, chopped (120 grams approximately)
- 200ml water
Mash Ingredients
- 1.25kg potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes
- 0.5 tsp cumin seeds
- 100 grams unsalted butter
- 100 ml milk or cream
- 1 tsp garlic granules
- 0.5 tsp salt
- grated cheddar cheese (full fat)
Method for mince
- Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the mince lamb and brown.

- Then add the garlic and ginger and stir through.

- Next add the onions, chopped tomatoes, salt, black pepper, ground coriander, ground cumin, paprika, onion powder, chilli flakes, frozen peas, carrot and water to the pan, stir through.

- Bring everything to boil, then turn the heat down and leave everything to simmer for 15 minutes.

Method for mash potato
- Whilst the lamb mixture is simmering, in another large saucepan, fill it with water and bring it to boil. Then add the potatoes and cumin seeds and cook until they are soft.
- Then drain the water from the potatoes, add them to a bowl, along with the butter, milk, garlic granules, salt and mash it all together. If the mixture is too dry, you can add more milk. You want to be able to easily spread the mashed potato.
Layering the Shepherds Pie
- Add the mince mixture to a baking tray, spread as evenly as possible.

- Then spread the mash potato over the top of the mince, use a fork to smooth it out evenly.

- Then sprinkle over the grated cheddar cheese and bake in the oven at 180C for 20 minutes, or until golden on the top.

Tips for Perfect Spicy Shepherd’s Pie
Control the Heat – Start with less spice and adjust to taste. Remember, flavours intensify while baking!
Creamier Potatoes – Use Yukon Gold potatoes for the smoothest mash.
Extra Crispy Top – Broil for the last 2-3 mins for a golden, crispy finish.
Lamb vs. Beef – Traditional shepherd’s pie uses lamb, but beef works great too (technically called “Cottage Pie”).

Variations & Customisations for this Hearty Meat and Potato Bake
Vegetarian Option – Swap meat for lentils or mushrooms, and capsicums.
Extra Spicy – Add hot sauce, chipotle peppers, or extra cayenne.
Cheesy Twist – Mix Parmesan into or underneath the mashed potatoes.
Sweet Potato Topping – Swap regular potatoes for sweet potatoes for a sweeter contrast.

Serving Suggestions for Easy Comfort Food with a Kick
- With a Side Salad – A fresh green salad balances the richness. I also love steamed vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower.
- Crusty Bread – Perfect for soaking up extra gravy.
- Pickles or Chutney – Adds a tangy contrast to the spice. You could try my mint chutney with this meal.
Health Benefits
- Protein-Packed – Lamb or beef provides iron and protein.
- Veggie Boost – Carrots, celery, and peppers add fibre and vitamins.
- Spices Aid Digestion – Chilli and paprika may help boost metabolism.

Cultural Significance & Origins
Shepherd’s Pie originated in the UK and Ireland as a frugal way to use leftover meat. I’ve even made shepherds pie using left over keema matar for a more desi flavour. The spicy twist is a modern adaptation, inspired by global flavours like Mexican or Pakistani cuisine. If you like Western meals with a spicy twist, why not try my tuna pasta bake or spicy lamb keema pasta recipe.
